SoildiverAgro has just published a new article focus on fostering sustainable potato production. This collaborative research delves into the agronomic challenges faced by potato growers across Europe and the need for more sustainable farming practices.
The study focuses on identifying critical agri-environmental challenges and exploring sustainable strategies to reduce the reliance on external inputs like pesticides and fertilizers. A survey conducted with 203 potato stakeholders across six European pedoclimatic areas provided valuable insights into the problems growers face, their priorities for sustainable practices, and the barriers to adopting these practices.
As one of the main key findings, the research identified that potato growers in Europe face challenges such as intensive production and increasing pests and diseases, leading to a higher reliance on pesticides and fertilizers. To address these issues, stakeholders highlighted strategies like reducing tillage, using organic nutrients, increasing soil organic matter, and diversifying crop rotations. Also, the study emphasizes the importance of clear demonstrations, tailored advice, and continued research to help farmer transition to more sustainable and profitable systems.
